I found it's very easy to get a credit card while I opened my student account (actually the bank just want you to have it)
They are exactly like a normal credit card. Not sure are they called 'student credit card' or not.
I have pay my card in full all the time, I do regularly use the free bank overdraft and pay back in a short time and I never take over the limit.
Today, I try to apply online the Halifax clarity card to use for aboard study trip but they turned me down on spot.:(
I wonder if student could apply 'main stream' credit card at all, any student get successful to do that...
please share your precious experiences.
I am now in a very bad position....should I keep apply other credit card, I learnt that one suppose to do that at least 6 months after . Otherwise, it would be bad to showing as applicants look so desperately.
I really want to sort out this before my trip, I don't want a pre-paid master card and my credit card charge a lot to use overseas.

I managed to get a credit card with £500 credit on it. But I had to be earning £4000 at least per year, and since I still work part time whilst at uni I was able to get one. So i'm not sure this would apply to you.
Majority of credit cards I've seen are based on credit scores and your annual income anyway. So if you don't actually earn anything from a part-time job you're going to find it very difficult to get a mainstream credit card.....
They probably call them 'student credit cards' for that reason, cause they're not expecting you to earn anything. Personally, if a bank is shoving a credit card in your hand and telling/asking you to take it, I wouldnt touch it. Cause you know they're just waiting for you to make one mistake and then they'll charge you a bomb!!!!

I've got 2, one with £500 limit and my Halifax 0% (now expired mind you) with £1600 limit. Neither were student offers, not normal credit card offers.0

I got a Tesco credit card with 0% on purchases, and the Lloyds TSB airmiles card when I was in my 2nd year 2 years ago. They've probably clamped down by now as I'm quite surprised I got both with no problems.

One of my offspring has a credit card although do not recall if visa or mastercard. Just went into the bank and asked and explained that they wanted to start building a credit rating and also was doing a year abroad. Again though, have a long standing relationship with bank.0

i've had a halifax credit card since i opened my student a/c 13 years ago, always pay it off in full. have a healthy ISA with halifax & bank a/c with sufficient funds & never overdraw... so when I click from my online account to apply for a Clarity Card so I can have a credit card with actual benefits, i was looking forward to some zero charges, no thinking that zero would be what my loyalty means to them. furious. can't be resolved in branch or on phone. they expect me to write to them & spell it out. my halifax history should be enough but alas they think 999 credit score is what they should base their decision. shame on them. i will send a disgruntled letter but i grudge having to waste my time & really feel like moving all my accounts. i am bitter!0
