In fairness they are a business and not obliged to give any help or assistance.

Many companies take that harsh (but fair) approach as many people would simply 'try-it-on' to get cheaper fares.

But they don't get them from the airline without proof.

Which would require the airline to have a system in place to asses the validity of 'proof'. It's easier and cheaper for the airline to have a 'no help' policy.
Airlines are a business and don't have to help in the slightest - I think I'm trying to give a business-rational why this is.

Conversely the positive-PR from helping someone in need at a difficult time is lost.

Can't you get someone to Skype the funeral to you.

Undertakers, crematorium and churches are already looking at doing this in the UK due to families no longer all living close to each other or living abroad. Not the same I know but better than not being able to attend or having to pay £000s to attend.

My understanding these days is with compassionate fares the airline will do everything thy can to ensure you get to your destination asap but there isn't generally any discount on the cost.
