Thanks izools, that's great advice. I'm not sure if they sent me a 'final demand', I'll have to go through the pile of unopened letters. That'll make for fun reading!

Can I ask, is it possible to suggest a payment plan of _anything_ i.e. 20 quid a month? Someone told me that I can state whatever I want, and they have to accept it. Is there a template letter that would allow me to do this somewhere?

I personally think it's a bit off that they wouldn't send me letters abroad, but I guess it's not the end of the world.

Thanks again for anyone who gave me advice! For those that simply criticised/commented, please spend less time on this forum and go for a walk.

No, they don't have to accept whatever you want but you are under no obligation to offer more than you can reasonably afford.

If you can only afford £20 a month, and can demonstrate to them that you can only afford £20 a month, to which you keep up payments, they can't do anything more.

They may ask for a review of your finances every 6-12 months in the form of a income and expenditure sheet.

  • Thanks again izools. Much appreciated. Do you know of a link to a template letter that I could send and request such a repayment plan? I'm not working, living with my parents and am terminally broke - though I do have money in other foreign accounts, I need it for further investment - so I could easily make a case for a low monthly repayment, with a (genuine) mind to increase it after 6 months or so.

I have searched for template letters, but I never know which ones are best/to be trusted, so I'd really appreciate a personal reccomendation.

    Thanks!

There are some good template letters on the National Debtline website:

Just choose the "ask your creditors to accept pro rater payments" letter from the list and click through "write letter" :o

    Good luck!
