Adding girlfriend to AST - who benefits?

Just a quickie....
I get on great with my Landlady so asked if she had any issues with the g/f moving in and, as expected, she said that was fine.
I said that from her point of view just keeping the AST as it was (with just me) would be best as the g/f would have no rights (is that right?) BUT told her I'd be happy signing another AST with both of us if it made her feel happier.
Now she has spoken to the LA (who were only used to find me a year ago, all dealings are direct with LL) who suggest a new AST for £50 because that would prevent a sitting tenant situation.
The Q is, are they correct or just trying to get £50 for 10 seconds work?
As it happens, we've (LL and myself) agreed to just modify the original contract and use that so as not to incur any expense, but I'd be interested to know who really bebefits from a new AST - me or her?

It's a balancing act: If she is not a tenant she has no right to remain in the property independently of you, but she is also not liable for the rent (only you are).0

Exactly what I thought. So the LA saying if she's not on the AST she could end up as a sitting tenant is rubbish?0 -

GF benefits as she has security of tenure.
However, there is a potential disadvantage if you and GF were to split up. You wouldn't be able to evict your GF if she refused to move out.
BTW, if you do sign a joint contract, then unless this is done by a formal amendment by Deed to the current contract, it would be a completely new tenancy so a clear line should be drawn between the two tenancies; new check-in inventory and new deposit protection.0
