XBox 360 does not read disks

Options
hi all, i have xbox 360 that has stopped reading all disks, i have determined its the disk drive that is at fault and im prepared to buy another 1 but i know that you have too flash the new drives for them too work. is this a legal thing to do and if so has anyone done this before, as i understand you can just swap the main boards over from old drive too new as long as they are exact matches, but the drive i was looking at was a BENQ VAD6038 which im told is alot less noisy. if i was to go for this drive what is the best software to flash it and any guides that have been used by anyone would be a great help. Oh i have Googled it and have found lots of info for flashing but would just like some real feedback from anyone who has done this before.

thank you

no surprise that microsoft, the corporate scum of the computer industry, has deliberately made it as difficult as possible to change the dvd drive on the xbox.
  • This might be an overly simple suggestion, but have you tried standing the xbox up instead of having it lying down, or vice versa? I found that laying down my 360 wouldn't read disks, stand it on its side and it works fine, just a suggestion :)

I got the laser changed in mine, cost £30, worked fine after that.

hi sorry for late reply, when it started to play up i did stand it on side for a good few months and it was ok but i just think it has given up the ghost now. and i did think about replacing just the laser but i was just bit worried just encase it was something else plus the new drive is only £25 so cant complain for that i suppose. like above poster said why do microsoft have to make a simple disk drive replacement so complicated. ££££££££££ that's why. im not worried about the replacement part just need some help on the flashing part got rough idea how to do it but want to be 100% clear before i go for it.

You should try cleaning the laser first, and if that does not help do a potentiometer adjustment (to "turn up" the laser power). If that doesn't work I'd replace the laser rather than the whole drive. Technically flashing the drive is illegal AFAIK, tho it is done frequently. It also requires a particular hardware setup to flash the drive.

had a local lad do mine, put a new laser in it and for 20 quid it wasn't worth the hassle.

Hi i have decided to replace the laser on the drive and see if that works i have no problems in doing it myself but i just cant find a laser on eBay that is just for the liteon drive the only ones i see are for benq and liteon, so im assuming that they are both identical, would i be correct in assuming this here is the link for the laser im looking at.

  • The lasers for the Benq and Liteon drives are the same, so yes that looks fine.
