My mum is an OAP. She switched gas and electric suppliers. The old supplier sent her a statement saying she had overpaid by £200. Then later sent her a statment saying there had been an error and she owed £400 (£200 in their favour plus the £200 they had sent to her. Then they said they would waive the bill, on the 'phone, when my mum complained.Mum thought they meant the entire bill for £400 as they didn't stipulate anything different. Then they sent her a bill for £200. Another 'phone call and the supplier stated they only meant to waive the £200 extra, not the money they paid over. My mum being a hard up OAP, had already spent the money.
She has refused to pay anything back so far. The supplier seems keen for my mum to take this to the Ombudsman.
What should she do? My first thought is let them take it to the Ombudsman or the small claims court.
Please tell me what you think.

First I would write to the company explaining what has happened and give them a chance. Although she may orginal owe the money making mistakes like this isnt acceptable
