Refunded Twice!

Barclaycard recently took a payment of £488 from my bank account via direct debit without my authorisation (I had cancelled the direct debit via my bank two months before and was making manual payments online). I rang my bank (HSBC) immediately to complain and they agreed to investigate with a view to refunding me the following day. The next day, I rang barclaycard regarding something else and whilst I was on the phone I mentioned that they had taken £488 and the lady cancelled my direct debit (again!) and explained that barclaycard would refund me this money. A few days later I noticed I had been refunded twice - once via HSBC for the direct debit error and once via Barclaycard. Do I come clean or do I spend it! Could really do with the extra cash right now as have a baby on the way; otherwise I'd be a good girl and own up! Are HSBC/Barclaycard likely to spot this error? presumably HSBChave claimed the £488 back from Barclaycard in order to refund me?

At some point they'll notice, but it may take some time until perhaps their quarterly reconcilliations. You could spend the money, but eventually they'll catch up with you and ask for it back, so I'd save myself the hassel and just ring them and pay it back now.

An honest person would let them know; just as you let them know when the initial payment went against you.
A hypocrite would complain when the payment is against them and keep schtoom when it's in their favour.

Depends how you see yourself really.

They'll find out soon enough; it won't go UN-noticed :)

They will rectify it, if refunded and the bank refunds you also they will ask for it back
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

And I guess you could really do without the hassle of having to find the money when you need to buy baby stuff! I should let the bank know as otherwise you could find yourself in a position of them recovering the money from your account, when there is not enough in there to refund it - that could then leave you with overdraft fees, etc. etc.

If you really are that hard pushed for £400 that you would consider theft, then you need to have a good look at your budget before your baby arrives and see where you can make some savings. The debt free board would be a good place to start!

If HSBC has raised an indeminty, they will then apply to Barclaycard for the funds to be refunded to them, when Barclaycard refuse as they have sent you the funds then HSBC may just reverse the transaction and may cause you to go overdrawn. I would not chance it unless you are able to pay the money back if the demand it back in the coming months

Leave it alone for 12 months then I'd spend it :)

Bad advice (last post). They have 6 years to claim it back.
    I'd offer it back.
Ntot because I'm a saint, but cos it would be on my mind for 6 years and I can't be doing with that.
