Cancelling a contract with Pipex, the company from hell

When switching over telephone companies the old company should receive something called a 'managed cease'. However, Pipex don't seem to accept this. The only 'official' way to cancel their contract is to call them on their expensive number. Their procedure to retain customers (or keep billing you) seems to be to keep you waiting, then cut you off halfway through the process.
Therefore, I sent them an web Email asking to be disconnected which disappeared into the aether.
So on Talktalk's advice (their parent company on another number) I just canceled the direct debit instead, this was just after moving so it left me slightly out of pocket. Unfortunately this isn't the end, they appear to be able to send me recorded phone calls every day at random times reminding me of my unpaid bill. The number phoning me of course is not recorded. I doubt if the TPS would accept it.
So far I have complained to their customer services by letter and Email with the expected evasive replies asking for more information (they had more than enough)
Having a past contract with this company is like than having a vindictive x-partner turned stalker. Has anyone found a way of purging this disgusting company?

This number is dead, where did you get it from?
I think Pipex have long closed all those freephone numbers which are not sales lines.0
