Question about new car insurance / SORN rules

....and if you want to add a bit more fun into the mix, some MID updates take 24 hours to appear (after the insurer has acknowledged the changes and processed, so that could take an additional 3 working days), and some Police computers only get a weekly download/update.
Is this an across the board EU type directive? Can just see the Spanish, French and Greeks complying. The Greeks couldn't even bring in MOT's without government buildings being firebombed, saying that the only requirement there is that the horn works0 -
Mine says..The policyholder may also drive with the owner's permission a car not owned by the policyholder and not hired to the policyholder under a hire purchase or annual leasing agreement and is not used in connection with the motor trade. This is provided the owner of the car has valid insurance in force on that car but which does not cover the policyholder of this Policy to drive that car.0

"Your policy may cover you, only, for driving other cars which do not belong to you (provided your certificate of insurance shows that you have this cover). However, cover is restricted to third party liability only and does not provide cover for loss or damage to other cars you are driving.
The Driving Other cars cover to this policy does not apply to any car belonging to your partner.
This limited cover can be very useful in an emergency, but if you are planning to drive someone else’s car regularly you should be named on their insurance policy."And my certificate indeed does show I have this cover.0 -
Hello all, just a quick question about the new rules relating to car insurance and SORN.
My partner is at university, and goes back to her home country for the summer. Every year we suspend her car insurance to save money. The new rules seem to imply that the car must be declared SORN. But what if I want to drive it? I am insured fully comp on my car, so I can drive hers legally as I will be covered by my policy.
Any thoughts?
the big problem you will have with this ill thought out legislation is that when you sorn your vehicle for having no insurance on it you have to surrender the tax disc for a refund, so even if you found a way of driving it with your own insurance you still have to go out and buy a new tax disc.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

No, you can't.
I'm in the same situation.
If the car doesn't have it's own insurance, you must surrender the tax, and sorn it. If it's sorned, you can't use it on the road.
I have been told by the insurers I can take out laid up insurance, and it will still be on askmid, so I don't need to sorn it. True or not, I don't know.
As I don't own the car, (family member does) my insurance will let me drive it, without the need for the car to be otherwise insured.
So, is that the way round it?
The other aspect of this, as the isurers will no doubt be falling over themselves to sell laid up policies if this is indeed correct, all an un insured driver has to do is buy a laid up policy, and it'll show as insured on all the ANPR's afterwards.
Laid up policies are certainly available and are popular with people building kit cars and doing restorations. However as they provide fire and theft cover only, if it does go onto MID it surely will have a marker against it to show that there is no 3rd party cover.0 -

Not sure that will show up on MID; I don't think it's that advanced.
What I imagine people will want to do is have laid-up policies which, upon phoning up their insurer, can be converted into TP/comp for a day or two, for extra cost.0 -
i thought laid up policys were garaged vehicles only? but modifiable with certain insurers to drives or private hardstanding, but must be kept OFF public highways at all times.
its just a security if someone nicked it, or a fire broke out. these type of policies were never designed to have thirdparty risks added them or otherwise what would be the point of it.
either way the policy cert will give you no access to a tax disk as it doesnt have TPR and those like me who cant drive any vehicle registered to the same address as my policy still wouldnt be able to drive it.0 -

Wow. Every time somebody says this (or similiar) despite the fact that most policies don't say this0 -

plus it only has 3rd party cover so if you stack it, you have to pay to fix it0
