cancelling direct debits

Some advice please: my daughter had a monthly direct debit with a national gym in Manchester. She went to the gym in September and cancelled the DD prior to doing a gap year in the antipodes: she's discovered that the DD is still in place: the bank doesn't want to know; the gym denies any knowledge of the cancellation, and have not acknowledged any instructions sent be e-mail. My daughter has no reliable address in Australia to send forms to fill an return. There must be a way to pull the plug from a distance.

May depend on her bank - either send cancellation instructions to them by email / online banking (that's how I do it rather than going to the originator) or tell her to send a letter to her bank if her bank insist on a signed piece of paper by courier if necessary to ensure it gets to her bank before Christmas. The cost of a courier letter will be far cheaper than a monthly DD payment if she can save a month.
