Can non driver hold car insurance policy

Following a stroke my father in law has had to surrender his licence and no longer drives. He is the policy holder for car with his wife as named driver. Can he continue to hold the policy as a non driver and so keep the NCD he has built up with his wife as the actual driver.

No reason why not as long as you inform the Ins. co. that she is the main driver, but the easiest way to do it is to transfer the NCD to your mother. Just ask the insurance company and explain. If she is the policy holder it would mean she could drive other cars (subjectt to t&cs of course.
This happened to me last year. Ive always been the main driver although OH held the policy, but when he decided not to
drive any more the coop kindly transferred the NCD for me on a new policy in my name.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

In theory there is no reason why not but in practice you are going to stop yourself from being able to use online systems and thus make buying insurance much more painful.

It may be worth speaking to the existing insurer and see if they are willing to switch things over for the remainder of the policy to his wife. Then at renewal time they'll get documents showing her having the NCD and will be back in business with online systems again
  • I'm pretty sure to be on a car insurance policy you need to have a driving license. If he has surrendered his, not just chosen not to drive anymore, then surely he cannot be on the policy.

I agree that the company will probably transfer his NCD to the wife and put her as a main driver but I doubt they would allow someone with no license to be insured on the car.

I think you'd be running the risk of the insurance being declared void. When you apply for new insurance they ask if you hold a Full or Provisional licence.
Not having one at all isn't one of the options unfortunately.

Best to be up front with the insurance company and do it by the book.

My husband is now the main driver in our house ( due to my redundancy, not needing 2 cars etc) I gave him my 8 years NCB. I had to write a letter to the insurance company and explain but they did it for free.
I can't get them back of course and will then have to start from zero if I hold my own policy but as he drives the van it still would work out cheaper that way.
I would look into that first as it would then give your mother in law all the NCB she should need and will save any hassle down the line
