If you don't already have an account with them, it all comes down to credit scoring.

They were doing a deal some time back whereby you got £25 (or some similar amount) if you took out a credit card.

My wife and I were both with First Direct, no kids, no mortgage and healthy salaries being paid in monthly. We applied and didn't anticipate any problems given our low risk profile.

HSBC wouldn't issue a credit card until they'd spoken to us in person!

Guess who closed their First Direct accounts down and moved their business elsewhere?

In fairness FD and HSBC are run as two seperate banks.
