A warning to self employed people…
I've recently received several emails regarding a large tax refund from HM Revenue & Customs – or at least that's who they claim to be – saying I'm due a considerable refund.
It's from the web address refund.alert.hm@hmrc.gov.uk so it looks pretty official and legitimate.
It invites me to click through an invited link, there's the HMRC website and it asks me to choose my bank from a list of logos before entering my bank details in order to receive a refund.
As it was listed as junk mail I did a bit of online research… and found that it's definitely a SCAM. It's aimed at cleaning your bank account – apparently known as a 'phishing scam'.
I guess, as with most things, if it looks too good to be true then it certainly is.

HMRC would not inform customers of a tax rebate via email.

If you have received an email claiming to be from HMRC that you suspect may be fraudulent, please forward it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -
I've had loads of similar emails; it's not just aimed at self employed people.
What I want to know though is how they get such an official email address?0
