A friend, who is quite new to computers has taken many pictures .. and hopes to take many more, but at the present time, they are stored on his camera and his computer.
He wants a USB flashdrive as a backup, as well as a way to take them to get printed.
I've suggested a USB, but would like to know which brands are good and are there any brands to avoid, maybe for speed of loading, or unreliability etc.
Which 8GB is the current best buy
thanks !

Maybe just get an sd card reader - £1 up ,eg poundland, and get another sd card for the camera eg -

I see some have 'ready boost' what does this mean ? or what is it for ?0
-
It's a Vista/7 app that allows the pc to store some programs on a permanently plugged in USB device for quicker access than a HDD.0
-
"Ready Boost" means they cost a bit more than the ordinary Flash Drives of the same capacity. I cannot find any other difference...0

A blank dvd is cheaper!!

A "ready Boost" usb flash drive in theory adds more ram to your computer and helps things run faster whilst it's plugged in.
If it's a permanent back up solution he's looking for, then an 8gb flash drive won't be any good, as it won't be long before it's full.
I would suggest an external hard drive with a larger capacity of about 500gb.
If he wants to get photos printed, then most retailers have card readers anyway, so there would be no need for a usb flash drive.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -

He has been using my camera, so he has been downloading the images onto his hard drive, with my help but wants prints ... but not yet
He's waiting to take more pictures first, then printing them all out in one go to make up a few albums .. he's a new campervan enthusiast, so all of the pictures have been of his van ... with more to come (Agh !!!)
His pictures so far range from 2,189KB to 1,100KB in size, which give a rough average of 1600KB. My basic maths, 1GB (about 1000000KB) / 1600KB gives 625 pictures / gigabyte.
Maybe a 4GB stick would be OK, but for an additional couple of quid an 8GB is probably OK too.
No other backup will be needed, but he might be wanting to show others his photos .. hence the USB stick option
Poor them .. maybe 5000 pictures of 1 campervan0 -
Dont buy a from ebay, if you get a memory stick pay the extra to get one from a well known store.
ebay is literally full to the brim with fake memory sticks and cards.[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

I agree 1TB usb HD is better for around £40 they quite small and often dont require mains power and are quicker to write than many usb flash drives which are usually quicker on reading than writingAbbafan1972 wrote: »I would suggest an external hard drive with a larger capacity of about 500gb.
