Where would I stand if item was damaged in transit?

We are selling a large kids wooden playhouse that we bought from B&Q on ebay. We put in the listing that it's been un-packed but not put together and all the pieces can be checked off against the list of contents.

We put due to the size and weight of this it would need to be collection only. Someone has just sent us a message saying they would like to bid on it and are happy to send up a courier such as City Link which is fine by us. I was however wondering what would happen if any of the wood was damaged or any of the pieces lost in transit?

Would you prepare something for a buyer or courier to sign to say that everything was checked off and not damage when it was collected?

I know i'm looking for problems before any have arisen but I have never sold anything that can't be posted before.

A courier would usually expect it to all be boxed up neatly so that there is no chance of any bits going missing. The same re damage. It would be your responsibility to ensure that it is protected so that with normal handling (and with City Link that means throwing it from one end of the van to the other) it won't get damaged.

There isn't much chance of protecting it to that extent then, it wasn't even packaged like that when we bought it, it was just wrapped in a sheet of plastic.

I would be keeping this as a collection only item and encouraging the buyer to pay cash on collection. They can then check everything hand over the dosh & be on their merry way.
If you courier it, you would be responsible for it until the buyer receives it, if they decide that there's something wrong, they would need to return it but you would have to give a full refund including the original postage costs. I take it that would be on a pallet, so would be pretty pricey.
