Not surprisingly the person who was interested in buying the bike insisted he wanted to use the paypal method - he "forgot" to answer questions like when do you want to come and look at the bike but we won't be using paypal only cash -he just kept saying he wanted our paypal details so he could send us the money! - needless to say after another couple of emails asking when he wanted to come and view the bike he has gone very quiet;)

In all seriousness who is going to buy anything used especially mechanically without even seeing it?? Or even arranging a collection??

I could understand if you have something unique and rare, someone saying I want it, I will pay for it so you won't sell it to anyone else and when can I collect it but it doesn't sound like that in this case.

Stick with cash, if you don't know how to spot a fake note buy a note checking pen for a couple of quid. Good luck with your sale.

Thanks - it is a nice bike and my husband has put a lot of care into keeping it looking good and he commutes on it everyday - i am a naturally suspicious person having spent most of my working life in the hotel business and heard & seen most scams! when he phoned me and told me what the first email said alarm bells started ringing straight away but i like to check things out with the friendly bunch on here:D

At the end of the day you are the seller, if it doesn't feel right don't do it. There will always be some chancer trying to take your belongs/money etc so you should always be on your guard. If in doubt think about it from the other side, would you look for a bike on the autotrader and arrange to make a payment without arranging to see it or even ask any details about it?? Even with the most comprehensive listings there will still always be an unanswered question or you will still want confirmation on condition etc.

  • My daughters partner had the same thing. Only this guy was a deaf Oceanographer who was away at sea!!!

I have a standard letter I have made up and use, I was selling my laptop I just alter the wording.

Thank you for purchasing my Laptop.
Due to the high possibility of scams and charge backs.

    The following will apply.

    1) As soon as I receive the payment by Paypal I will transfer the money to my bank account.

    2) As soon as the money is in my account I will withdraw it.

    3) This means I will have my money without been scammed.

    4) This can take up to 10 days. As soon as I have withdrawn the money I will send you the laptop.

Please don’t email me for tracking numbers until I have cleared your payment.

I will not send the laptop without the money cleared and withdrawn from my bank account.

Please email me your acceptance of these terms. I will need to know so I can withdraw the advert.

    You never get a reply!!

You need to change that to 45 days not 10, a dispute can be raised with 45 days. Even if you withdraw the money and a dispute is opened, and paypal sides with the buyer they will still pay the buyer regardless of whats in your paypal account. Paypal will then chase you for the money. If they can they will automatically take it from your bank account or from your registered credit card.
