Portable hard drive - are these ok?

I need to transfer about 40gb of files from an old laptop to a new one, or transfer some and store the rest. I missed a good deal on an 80gb one that was on HUKD last week so have been looking around at others...

These ebay sellers have good feedback for their drives, but there's no brand name on them; can anyone advise whether on the info given they should will be ok? (Still contemplating getting 160gb instead of 80gb)

he's got over 20,000 feedback at 99.9% positive and sells a lot of hard drives, so the answer would be, yes.. they're ok.

pcworld sell a 320GB for £33

you could transfer them across the network for nothing, or if you are disposing of the old machine, buy a caddy for £4

I'll never need one that size, so even thought it's only a bit more, I don't need that much space.

I might try doing some over the network tomorrow, see how quick it is.

What's a caddy? The current laptop is a work one which I have to give back when I leave soon...

Myself, I wouldn't leave anything to chance with my data. For the sake of a few £, I'd rather get a branded one from a retailer on the high street.


I got a 500gb Verbatim ext hdd that allows me to make regular back-up's and keep some stuff for very occasional use.

a caddy is a usb enclosure, put hard disk in and transfer files, but as it's a work machine you might not want to take it apart.

A disk image backup or 2 and a few video's could easily fill up that 80GB disk

will take a while across the network, but you don't have to sit and watch it

If you're confident you can take the HDD out and replace it again, buy a caddy.

Take HDD out of old laptop

Place HDD in caddy, connect to new machine, copy files.

Take HDD out of caddy, replace in old laptop
