Please help with how to work hot water Timer - I am clueless!

Hope someone can help - basically I do not know how to use my hot water control! Its on a unit with a central heating control. Someone set it to come on twice a day a while ago for me and I am scared to touch it in case I muck it up and cant get it on again. I am going away for a while and would like to switch it off. Do I cycle through to the off switch and that overrides the timer coming on or would that just switch it off until the preset time? There is a box next to it with a big switch do I put that off. I know it must sound really dumb but I really need some help with this - thanks

Make and model would help-someone can probably post a link to the instruction manual for you. Or you could do a Google search for it yourself.
If set it to 'off' then that means off-it overides the timer setting. Similarly 'on' means permanently on. 'Timed' is the setting you probably want, it then comes on and off based on the 4 programmable settings.
If you turn off the 'big switch' next to it then you are probably cutting the power supply to it, so it won't come on at all.
