Refused benefit why?

I hope someone can help me. A few weeks ago we learned about someone with dyslexia getting disability benefit. My DH has dyslexia,so I rang the benefit people an they said dyslexia comes under learning disability and they sent out a form. I filled the form in for him and understood he would be eligable as he is disadvantaged when it comes to employment, He is currently working 40 hrs a week but if he lost this job he is disadvantaged bacause he find reading difficult and his writing is often illegable. They sent a letter back saying he isnt eligable. is there anyway he can appeal?

Disability Living Allowance is for people who need help with care or mobility needs such as those who can't dress themselves or who can't walk. Not being able to read doesn't count. To qualify for DLA with a learning disability you'd need to be like my son who cannot go out unaccompanied as he can and will never be able to cross a road on his own.0

Yeah, it's worth clarifying which benefit is in question here. If it is DLA then it doesn't sound like he'd be able to get either component unless there's disability and effects not evident from your post.
If you're talking about ESA then he would have to be out of work or 'long term sick' in effect.
If it is neither of these things other people should be able to advise as to why he got turned down."Do not attribute to conspiracy what can adequately be explained by incompetence" - rogerblack0 -
Thanks for replying, its the tax credit thing, sorry I'm not up to speed with benefits, its all new to me.0

there is no way that DLA would be paid for dyslexia,
whoever told you this is taling absolute rubbish.
DLA is for care and mobility needs.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
DLA is paid to those who have care and/or mobility needs. It is not paid for a diagnosis. Although dyslexia is a specific learning disability, it does not lead to care or mobility needs, so your DH will not be elegible.
It could be that the person you know has some other form of disability in addition to dyslexia. It might be a hidden disability and not something that they advertise. I would very much doubt anyone recceiving DLA for dyslexia alone, as reading and writing are not part of a person's care or mobility, which are the two components of DLA.

I'm sure this post stated DLA a moment ago, hence my reply above.0 -
I don't think the OP is talking about DLA, more like the disabled element of WTC? Certainly when they mention working 40 hours per week and if they became unemployed they would be at a disadvantage.
