Virtualbox will do the trick and is available for both Linux and Windows.

As above - virtualbox will allow you to run multiple VM's simultaneously

Thanks for that. I'm using VM Player at the moment and didn't realise it could run more than one at a time. Will have to change to VBox though, so I'll be able to use in Linux & Windows.

Will Vbox import VM's from player?

I use VMware player daily, and have at least one and possibly 2 or 3 VMs open running Ubuntu Linux/Windows 7/Windows XP. I use the VMs as self-contained desktops onto environments that I need to access via VPN, so I can run multiple VPNs simultaneously on one PC.

I've also had Windows server/Solaris/Linux VMs open simultaneously.

My host PC is a small Dell with 4 GB memory running Windows 7 32-bit, and I've assigned 1 GB to each VM. I've got two monitors attached, and usually put the VMs onto the 2nd one, leaving my main screen for my Windows desktop.

I've looked at Virtual PC (free from M$) and Virtual Box (Sun/Oracle), but I find VMware Player easiest. There is a website called "Easy VMX" that you can setup and download VM configs for free.

I use VMWare and Virtualbox daily at work. The one thing you WILL need is plenty of memory, and I'm talking 8gb recommended if you're running a few operating systems.

VMWare player will only let you run one image at a time, but it's free. Virtualbox is free, as far as I was aware VMWare server is not free.

Now, in my experience VMWare is superb, does what it says on the box, works brilliantly. Virtualbox is fine for short term running of operating systems, (great if you need to quickly test some software). However, I've had a lot of issues with virtualbox when trying to run a long term domain, IE over a few days. It got to the point where I had to give up on it and will now only use VMWare for my virtual domain.
