    It is unlikely you'd be able to receive tax relief. The reason for this is that HMRC will only allow you to claim for expenditure which is wholly and exclusively for business use. They will argue that if it was necessary for business use, your employer would be paying for it.

    I'm not so sure - they have a section on their website that specifically refers to employees getting tax relief for travel expenses (so long as they haven't already been reimbursed by their employer).

    The issue is that the employer have offered to pay for accomodation, but the OP has turned it down.

    Ah yes you do have a point there. Not sure if there are any rules regarding standard of accomodation provided in general. I know in our organisation (public sector) it's always supposed to be individual, en-suite and a minimum of around 3 star or equivalent (not always possible when some people are in some little African town). That of course is a company policy though rather than a law.
