Credit card fraud

Dh has had several transactions go from his card that aren't his. Its all being looked into, account has been stopped etc. The credit card company picked up in it intially and rang him.

Someone has somehow added themselves to dh's account and has been using his card number with their name. I'm worried about how they have managed to add themselves to his account.

Today we got the statement showing the transactions. One big thing thats worrying us is that we transferred some money across to the card pre-empting a payment that we knew would be coming off so the card would be cleared. It seems the person saw this and then transferred this money off into a bank account! This makes me wonder if dh's credit card account has been hacked and they added themselves this way too? They took the exact amount that was credited to his card.

They have also bought temporary car insurance several times but whats the point in that, surely if its in a false name its not providing any cover? Also bought travel tickets with a bus company.

How on earth has all this happened? The credit card company have been rather pants. Depsite them picking up on it all over a wk ago we have come back off holiday to find they've not done anything about it yet other than stop the card and issue a new one. They haven't issued the paperwork for us to fill in. They won't tell us what bank account this money has disappeared to either although dh has managed to see the other name that was being used. I shall assume the person isn't thick enough to be using their real name but who knows eh?! I'm really annoyed that they've actually managed to steal our money, won't be paying credit cards in advance in future!

Should we leave this for the credit card company to deal with or inform the police ourselves too? Dh has put in a complaint only to be told it takes them 5 odd days then they will call him back. He wasn't even allowed to speak direct to the complaints department, just a supervisor with the fraud department which i find very strange. This is the 2nd time its happened to him with this company. Think we shall be closing his account once this is resolved!
