No longer work for them. Thought i had removed all their software! I use a '3' dongle for internet connection, don't have a landline.

still got related entries in your host file, and downloaded files - delete c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

    uninstall spybot.

Disable Windows Defender. To disable windows defender on vista or windows 7 - from the start menu, windows defender, tools, options, untick use real-time protection, under administrator options, untick use windows defender and untick allow everyone to use windows defender, click save to save settings.

Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

re backups, if you have a lot of data, an external portable usb disk (<£40) is probably more suitable for backups than dvd, but I would recommend using dvd's to create a second copy of the most important data

Was unable to delete the 'arise' stuff via hijack this. Also when erasing the 'spigot' stuff said it said i needed permission to delete: 'Destination access folder denied. You need permission to perform this action'. Not sure but i think the 'spigot' stuff is related to Chrome. I tried the browser ages ago but it didn't work and i uninstalled it. I was also unable to delete O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [AvgUninstallURL] cmd.exe and a few other things you highlighted. Do you have any suggestions to clean up these? Are there any other things i should erase?

    Thanks again.

if it doesn't work, try right clicking hijackthis.exe, run as admin first.

    What's on the d drive? 3 dongle?

    have you installed pdf creator?

    http://www.spigot.com/uninstall.html

unless you use it, uninstall microsoft search enhancement pack

Switched off defender now. Did this before, must have switched it on again by mistake. Not sure about pdf creator, will check this out.

How do i run hijackthis in admin? Had a look in 'start' menu but i'm not sure what to select. Also, unable to uninstall microsoft search enhancement pack, as the computer wants permission 1st . Feel like i'm being bossed about by this bl00dy machine!
The only thing i have in 'd' drive is dvd rw.
Attempted to check the spigot link but some sort of warning came up, so left it.

    Thanks again for your help.

find the hijackthis.exe, right click, run as admin

disable this using msconfig, startup too

    O4 - Startup: Temporary Shortcut.lnk = D:\autorun.exe

if your screen is dimming when doing these things, and you get asked for permission, grant it, if it's some other error, post details

Hi, sorry to resurrect an old thread, have been off line for a few days. Didn't think it necessary to start a new one.
Thanks for your previous help closed, but as it happens my laptop crashed completely  so i purchased a re-installation cd. Everything is now fine, but for some reason Windows Firewall keeps turning itsef off. I have to switch it back on whenever i turn-on the laptop.
    Any suggestions? Thanks as ever...

if you had the recovery partition, you could have used that instead of buying a cd. is it a oem cd for your higrade machine?

sometimes sign of an infection -- malwarebytes scan

have you updated to sp3, what security software is installed, post another hijackthis log

Did a system restore which seems to have sorted out the issue with Windows Firewall. I no longer need to turn on Firewall each time. Having said that, my laptop still feels 'sluggish'. It took an age for Firefox to download and run correctly. This might just be my crappy Tmobile dongle though. Tmobile is my back-up when '3' is playing up .

Not sure what an oem cd is. Hi grade sent 3 disks. Disk 1 was the Boot CD, then disks 2 & 3 completed the installation.

I'm running Windows Firewall and Avast. I uninstalled 'Windows One Care' which came with the Vista software, as i don't think i'll need it.
