I know that this involves a little expenditure first (unless you can get someone to buy as a christmas present) but this book was how I learnt to cook when I left home at 16. I can't sing it's praises high enough - and I referred to it for the basics for many years. It'll certainly be in the hamper that I give my son when he leaves for Uni in a few years.

If you really don't want to buy it you could always try to get your local library to get it in - and every college/uni should have at least one copy!

Go to the library and get out some books - just remember to renew them/return them in time! I was at uni in Norwich and the Forum has the best cookery section I've ever seen in a library. All bang up to date, so all the tv chef books with the great pictures.

Just got some pro cheffing knives for Xmas, so looking to get my cook-on in the new year.
