Council tax refund

Hi there. Not sure if this is the most appropriate thread but looking for some advice. We are currently in a rented property and pay our council tax over 10 months (we don't pay in feb and march.) We are buying a house now and are moving in at end of July. The house we are moving to is a lower band of council tax (about £350 difference per year.) Therefore I think that we will have paid too much council tax when we move out. Are we able to claim to have this refunded?

Well you can but I'd ask council to credit your new account the amount of the refund so you don't have to pay the August payment.:footie:

Council-tax is charged by account, so there is no direct connection between the charges for the property you are currently paying for and the new one. The account for the rented property will be closed and a new one created once you occupy the new one. If there is any over-payment for the current property you should request a refund.
Do all of this in writing once you have moved, enclosing a copy of your current council-tax demand so they know which account should be recalculated and closed.0 -
When I moved last year I was able to inform the council tax department online. Check out the council website and see if you can do that. They then refunded me but I seem to remember it took them a long time.0

My account was transferred when I moved house, so I still have the same account number but with a different property ref.0
