New Sort Code

Options
Tesco have today changed the sort code on one of my accounts. Having just tried to use this new sort code to make an online payment (to Tesco) from an external account I'm told that the new sort code is not recognised.

Does anybody know how this works, is there a central database of sort codes which all the banks reference, or do they each maintain their own database? Either way, any guesses as to how long they might take to update them? (probably a how long is a piece of string type question!)

I've made a test £1 payment from First Direct to Tesco using the new sort code.

It has arrived safely in the Tesco account. Sounds like it is a problem specific to your bank?

Worth looking at Milarky's thread over on the budgeting and banking board that is covering the Tesco changes today.

Yes, I was attempting a test payment too.

Yes, there's no urgency from my point of view so I'll wait a while to see if it fixes itself.

Thanks, I'd not seen that thread. I tried (and failed) logging in this morning, and online banking seems to have been 'unavailable' ever since.

Why not state what the sort code actually is - I had to call them up as it's nowhere on their site or referenced in news items &tc? For my internet saver they tell me it's going to be '406406' for when I can actually go to the website to 'register' for access.

I had a letter from Tesco about the sort code changing on my accounts with them:

    Instant access savings: 40-64-04
    Internet saver: 40-64-06

BUT another family members Tesco's Instant access savings account sort code has changed to: 40-64-02

Yes, mine's the same, I got a letter informing me a couple of weeks ago.
