I've paid cash and cheques into my Halifax current account at the Post Office since they closed all their Agency offices. All fine. Usually shows up online within a couple of days (dated the date it was paid in IIRC)

Did you have to go to the bank to get the personalised paying in slip and deposit envelope? Or phone the call centre

In the few weeks before the agency closed they were giving out leaflets about the closure and there was a 'phone number to ring (I'm guessing probably the call centre) we told them which accounts we wanted paying in books & envelopes for and they sent them in the post.

Just found this on Post Office website - at the bottom it says

"To order personalised paying in slips or cheque deposit envelopes, please call 0800 028 8162."

Thanks for the help. I will pop to the bank tomorrow and use the post office in future.

I've often posted cheques to Santander in a normal envelope with just a handwritten cover note - e.g. Dear Sir or Madam, please would you pay the attached cheque into account name XXXX, account number XXXX, sort code XX-XX-XX. Many thanks, Jim

The money always appears on my on-line statement within a few days - though I can see the advantage in getting some pre-paid envelopes from the bank to save on postage.

Well I never! Do I need a slip or just a letter??

There should be a paying in slip at the back of your chequebook if you have one.

Make sure the cheque is payee only and you've signed the back of it

also put your roll number on the back of the cheque if your post it to halifax
  • If you prefer with the Nationwide you can print off a paying in slip online (under other services) to include with your cheques and post them to a central address. It isn't that high tech as you have to type in your account number yourself!
