MP3 not recognised by PC

I bought an MP3 last month, plug and play, connected it to the PC with a USB cable, transferred music over - lovely.
In fact, so good I gave it to my sister and ordered myself an identical one. However, this one is not recognised by the PC, it charges but there is no sign of the usual "installing device" or similar message and it does not appear in Windows Explorer. I have tested the USB cable on other devices and it's fine; also tested the USB connection on the PC which works fine with other devices.
All that happens when I plug the MP3 player in with the USB cable is that it charges (successfully). The MP3 also has an option for a MicroSD card which works perfectly. I've looked at the manufacturer's website but there's no drivers to download.
I suspect that we have had some kind of Windows update, or inadvertently changed a setting, in the month between the first successful MP3 player and now.
Any ideas ? We have Windows 7 32 bit and I've looked at the Windows Mobile Device Centre but that didn't help.
(If I do a restore to the point where the first MP3 worked, will I lose the Windows updates that have been installed since?)
Any advice gratefully received

You bought a MP3 player - not an MP3 on its on :-)
Anyway what brand / model is it?0 -
It's a Kubik Evo - excellent reviews on Amazon and excellent performance. No probs connecting the first one, just this one.0

Does the first one still work on the PC? If so, then you probably have a faulty player.

after doing what the others suggested. go into right click on MY computer, drop down list should appear, device manager click, scroll down to universal serial bus controllers, and remove all the usb mass storage and usb root hub items, reboot without the mp3 player connected and then reconnect the mp3player. it should rescan and hopefully pick up the mp3player. note: it will automatically reinstall any usb drive found connected aswell.
note2: only use the lead supplied with the mp3 player to connect to the pc, some usb leads only give power to charge up a device not to use as a portable drive. I bought a extendible one from the 99p shop which i thought i could carry with me like it. thought i would be able to use to move data across. didnt work.0 -
i had this with a pen camera and the way i got it working again was by draining the lion grrrrrrrrrr battery down a bit and it then worked again0

Thanks for your replies. I've tried all of these (except trying the first one as suggested by victor2, as my sister has it now and we won't see her for another month or so). Nothing has made a difference so far.
Any other suggestions please ? (other than accepting that maybe it is faulty !!)0 -

Yes, we have a netbook as well and I tried it on that with the same result. I did wonder if it's some kind of Windows update (which would have been installed on both the PC and the netbook). I shall take it to a friend this afternoon to try on theirs.0
