DVD Writing Software

Hi All,
I have a few home movies of the kids. I tried writing them to a DVD, in fact a few different brands, but they only seem to be viewable on computers and won't play in DVD players. Does anyone knwo where I might be going wrong, and whether I should be using a specific type of software?

The software I have tried is Pinnacle Instant Write (which cam with my laptop a few years ago), and Power Producer 2 Gold.

Cheers
Andy

  • Hi

I use Nero 7 premium, there is a downloadable trial version (I think it's limited to a 30 day trial) on their website and if you buy a code it can be unlocked to the full version. Use the Nero Vision package from this.

Alternatively you could try the totally free AVI2DVD, if you google it you should find it. Whilst not as good as Nero can't be faulted for a freebie!

Both of these work for a wide variety of formats, but without knowing what format your camera records in can't tell you for certain if it will work.

Also, are you making sure to finalise the disk so that nothing can be added after you've burnt it, if you don't do this it's unlikely to ever work on a standalone DVD player. There's probably a little checkbox somewhere in the options to do this.

Good luck with getting it to work.
  • Hi Snookboi,

I think I was finalising things but will givce it a try again with the software I have as well as trying out your recommendations.

The camera was one of the cheap video camera at Aldi recently. The filesa appear as Wiondows Audio/Vidoe files on my laptop.

    Cheers

What exactly did you write to dvd? Did you write x2 .avi files? Or did you write an Audio_ts and a Video_ts file to dvd?

You need the files in the Audio_ts and Video_ts writing to dvd either as data or as a bootable source.

Easiest method of converting .avi to dvd is this. Download this program http://freedownload.softonic.de/windows/vsoDivxToDVD_setup_0.52.99.exe its freeware. Go into the program options and set them for PAL or NTSC depending upon source media. Ie: if the source media is a PAL avi file, then it will have 25fps, so set the program to output a PAL dvd.

When it has finished, you will be left with a Audio_ts and a Video_ts file, burn both of these to dvd, insert dvd into regular dvd player and hit the play button.

The Power Producer Gold 2 program you already have, seems to be some type of dvd creation package, in which case you just need to burn the files that it outputted to dvd though this assumes they are infact Audio_ts and Video_ts files. If they are .vob and .ifo files, simply create two folders somewhere on your drive ie: Audio_ts and Video_ts drop the .bup and .ifo files into the Video_ts folder and burn both the audio_ts and video_ts files to a dvd.

    HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

What disc are you writing on ? My dvd player wont play DVD-R but will play DVD+R. My computer will play DVD-R and DVD+R, check your Dvd player book.

It's clear that the files need to be converted to a format compatible with DVD players. i.e. mpeg2 files.
If AVI2DVD doesn't work for you, let me know. I'll see if I can find something else.
