How is the Quorn roast? We've been eating more Quorn lately as it's been on offer (the fillets, pieces and mince) and really like it. Interested in trying the roast. Can anyone comment on how nice it is/what it tastes like etc?

I really like it, it's very convenient for a 'Sunday Roast' and I like the taste but then it's been over a decade since I've tasted real meat, it's a bit like the fillets I suppose but more Roast like and not as dry on it's own (I tend to use the fillets in sauces).

Ooh no I've never tried doing that, I've never even reheated it - .
Well worth a go, according to my son anyway.

Lynsey - take a look at www.food.com for crockpot receipes. Althought it's an American site, they use their slow cookers much better than we do. They even roast potoatoes and do jackets in theirs. I'm thinking I might take mine camping as it's so convenient.

Thanks, I'll have look. Roast potatoes in a slow cooker seems strange though??

Never tried it, only buy it when son's home. £2 is normally the "offer" price.

Popped into Tesco earlier to use the coupons on the milk (and look at clothes sale), came out empty-handed as they never had the milk (Pro Activ). Might pop to Sainsbury's in an hour, but probably not. Another NSD if I don't go out. :j

Got a little bit milk to last until tomorrow morning and baked the rolls earlier. Found some sliced bread when sorting the garage freezer out - might be OK for toast, or the birds can have it (only 4 slices).
So probably toast tomorrow and I took out some cooked sliced beef and will have hot beef sandwich with gravy. Possibly scrambled eggs also tomorrow.
Found a pack of Lidl rump steak (must have been there for ages) in garage freezer and looks a little icy, that may be my 1st attempt when using my slow cooker, beef casserole. Got plenty of pork still, never seems to go down and my local Lidl has pork chops at half-price this weekend. I was going to buy just 1 pack, but not now.
Created a little space when sorting the freezer, well almost half a drawer. Good that I've managed that, but also good as can take any fab bargains, have to be fab though. :D
Low on chicken breasts, that's my next target, and meatballs of course.

  • I'm a veggie of nearly 20 years, so I don't know how 'real' the Quorn Roast tastes, but I've always judged veggie food on the basis of if I like it rather than if it tastes like meat or not.

Lynsey - if I remember rightly, you put the potatoes in foil for jackets and cook dry, and I presume you cook roasts with a little oil, but I can't remember - never cooked them that way myself. I actually have 2 slow cookers (long story) as on food.com there are several recipes for afters (I use that term too, recovering) and I thought I could do a whole meal in slow cookers, have yet to be organised enough to achieve it mind you!!

We all have our weaknesses. :D

The foil makes sense in a dry slow cooker I suppose, interesting.
With a slow cooker, do you or can you leave it on overnight, or just pop it on in the morning for an evening meal??
I would imagine slow cooked meat would be very tender??

Right. Well. I CAN'T go shopping this weekend, I went after work and need to stop spending for this month.

In the past 2 days i've spent a total of £16.73!! I did get 3 packs of Birds Eye mexican chicken grills for 42p a pack which i plan to add to my lunchtime salads/wraps/pasta (hummm should have got more....) and packets of pedigree dog treats for 10p a go and lake district cheese for 33p.

So now, i really need to try to start making some dents in my freezer i've filled any space i did have with stuff bought today and bits i decided to freeze instead of chuck (a quiche for example)

It doesn't help i'm only allowed 1200 calories a day on my diet, so have to watch my intake quite religiously, which means my portions are smaller so i have more to freeze ! I can do it....i've £3 in my purse IF i need bread or milk, but will try to bake over the weekend and hopefully i won't need to spend out too much more this month.

Lifted pancakes out for breakfast, will make a start on my stash of WW crisps tomorrow too. Not done OH lunch yet but plenty in for him to have. I am planning a long walk of about 12k on Saturday, so will be able to treat myself to some fish and chips for dinner with any luck!

    Hello again.
Thanks for the welcome and the recipe for the marzipan muffins.
You can use any apples for the sausage and apple plait but Bramleys will go mushier.
I'm really pleased with myself today - I haven't spent anything or even been near a shop! However, the snood that I've been knitting is almost finished, and I think I will run out of wool before I'm done, so I might have to buy another ball of wool - really annoying.
    Sorry to get off track.
I've tried the Quorn mince to make quick spag bol, but I've never tried the other ones that you've been talking about. Maybe they can be part of my new recipe hunt! :)

Used up the remainder of the thawed sausages this evening plus some frozen veg. Tomorrow is a curry from the freezer too & have taken out another loaf & 4pts of milk to defrost.

I haven't set foot in a shop not spent a penny this year yet. I have £8 a day to live on (pocket money after essentials) and I'm £8.64 up at the mo :D
  • got 2 packets of beef organic mince 52p each today, pack of pears 34p aand some muffins for 28p i was especially looking for the muffins, if there would have been more then 1 pack i would have had them, no space in the freezer now, after all my hard work, so will be doing a slow cooker chilli on sat while i stay in bed all day will add some grated dark chocolate, it tastes fab with it in, not really well, if i feel better on sun may make a pear tart of some kind, have some puff pastry 2 rolls in freezer, freezer is so full had to take out one of my paella pots to ft meat and muffins in :(

    Knackered see you tomorrow.
