Indian visa help/advice needed please

So well yes, re-entering India within 60 days is indeed to be avoided if at all possible.
Basically:- the initial visa application for India was delayed due to the re-entry request (which Cannot in fact be granted in the uk), therefore:
- we had no time to apply for a 60-day Indonesian visa in London, then
- we arrived in Indonesia 21st July and purchased visa-on-arrival
- on 1st August we went to the very quiet Indian Consulate, which had no clue about the re-entry rules, but after two hours said they would contact London
- The Indian re-entry permit was issued to our passport only on 19th August, after closing time at Indonesian immigration
- We went back to Indonesian immigration today, but they said we had to leave the country as the visa was already expired (due to the very slow Indian consulate), so we had to buy a return ticket out of Indonesia and also pay a fine on exit (about 40 pounds each).
