Its time to upgrade the desktop, but I have no idea what brands are good and which to avoid like the plague. There are a few smaller brands out there like Median and Arbico which I have only heard of as reviewed on PC websites, and seem a bit cheaper than the big boys like Dell. Can anyone help of reliability/performance etc and what are the best brands to go for? All I know is i would like a PC with the new Intel core CPU, and we will use it mostly for looking at photos/videos etc. SHould I stick with the well known ones??!!

some of the small independent UK brands do get decent reviews in the computing press; personally, I am very much a fan of some of the HP business -- they label as such -- desktops. Dell seem to be getting a bad rap here as of late -- perhaps unfairly ?

    Yes its dead!
  • Choice of desktops is dropping off rapidly now.

Decide what you really want it for then pop in to your local independent computer shop and get them to build something for you.

i am also in the custom build camp, however just to note if you are only going to be looking at photos video's and doing a bit of web browsing you really dont need a core i cpu and can save money by going for the older, but still perfectly good core 2 or the amd cpu's

however by what definition is your old system dead? is it just slow, does it BSOD, does it have a start up loop or is it a case of not having any power etc
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
