Current account - default

I wanted to find out when a bank can issue a default notice on a current account - is it basically up to them or is there a criterea they have to meet first?
A couple of years my account went over the limit twice but I brought it back under the limit both times by transfering funds from other accounts within a day or so (on one occassion it happened on a Friday and the funds went in on the Monday).
The bank issued a default notice which I found very surprising, I paid money in which brought me under the limit but then they closed the account and registered a default on my credit file after a couple of uses of my debit card brought me over the limit by £25.

I received a 2 on my Equifax report back in 2009 as a result of my not paying in over £1000 for two months and therefore failing to meet the T's & C's of the account. I closed my account as a result.0
