we've recently had our bathroom done. naiveley we didn't get written agreement on the costs up front and our plumber's invoice now includes the extras that were lumped on as the job progressed.
does anyone know if he's charging a fair price for laying the floor - it's a 10m sq room which he boarded with plywood and then tiled with natural slate tiles using a flexible adhesive.
the labour costs for this came to £1,116.25 inc VAT, - this includes boarding, laying, grouting and cleaning. i sealed them myself and the materials were extra. this seems a lot. is it?
cheers

Good afternoon: I have to say you have been charged well over the odds for this job (labour only? ) Have to say this...it just goes to show that you should always get at least 3 estimates , a written quote in advance from your tradesperson of choice and the same for the extra jobs along the way before each proceeds. Just to qualify my statements... my OH is in plumbing and heating...I have typed up several estimates and written quotations for him over the years (and have been roped into labouring on occasion).
Good luck.

I had amtico floor put down in my bathroom through John Lewis. It was 7 square meters, they used 6ml ply underlay (included in cost) over the exisitng floorboards (the old floor covering had already been removed by ourselves). It cost us all in£750-800 (I can't remember exactly). The amtico was £55 per square meter and it took the guy a whole day to lay.
I know it is a different type of flooring and the room is a bit smaller, but it sounds like no more than a few hundred pounds worth of material, subtract that from what he charged you and that is the labour cost. I would have wanted him to have spent a week on it to charge that much.
Ask for a breakdown of the costs. I had a fantastic very experienced tiler do our shower enclosure. I am in Zone 3 SE London and his rate was £150 per day. I didn't shop around for quotes on the tiling though, but it semed fair for someone with a lot of experience in London and not just a cowboy.0 -

Having said that it does sound on the high side. Did he mention a rate for any extras before hand? Is he willing to provide a breakdown of this extra?A house isn't a home without a cat.
Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.
I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.
