Job hunting...am I doing something wrong?

  • 2007, time to start afresh. I work for a private company helping long-term unemployed into work - I would say use jobseekers direct more as they do all the searching for you and can post out application forms as well as arranging interviews over the phone.

At the same time, everytime you call them, the call is logged with your signing jobcentre/jobcentreplus office - at a review, when they ask what you have been doing to look for work, every application you have made is visible to them, so just tell them to check their screens.

The number for jobseekers direct is 0845 60 60 234

As someone else has suggested, get a third party to check your CV and make it as relevant as possible to the job you are applying for

The only problem with recruitment agencies is, they have that many people on their books, if you want to work, you have to call them on a daily basis to show that you are still available for work otherwise they rarely call you to put you forward for jobs

Another ill-informed, illiterate zenophobe. Are you Alf Garnett in disguise? I guess you wouldn't argue if an immigrant dentist sorted out your teeth or immigrant doctor saved your life?
A lot of migrants are taking minimum wage jobs our homegrown wasters are too idle to perform. I would have thought you mentioning Iraqi nationals coming over here was really a two-way street considering we went over there and invaded their country creating civil war and reaking more havok than we have ever solved. ;)
I think you need to become more enlightened and perhaps read something other than the Daily Star and comics. Free your mind..........

You must not live near me, my OH is one of those people who unfortunately really only has minimum wage jobs open to him for his experience and skills. There are not many jobs near me and we are over-run by eastern european workers. The last 3 jobs he has had they have done a mass lay-off and then re-employed eastern european people. And for this reasons wages have dropped because employers have realise that they can get away with this. Why would you employ british people who understand what rights they have when you can employ confuse people who do not understand our system.

Please do not think that I am being rascist because unless you can see it happening around you you would not believe how callous companies can be. And you can't really believe what B******S is written in the media. Also I do not blame the migrant workers that have come to this country it is just that our goverment should have protected our rights and access to job and they should control migrant numbers because companies will always try to make and save money from the vulnerable.

just echoing astaroth really. not the best time to be jobhunting. these things take alot longer than they used to. application forms, interviews, it all takes time and everyone is wrapped up in the busy festive period.

apply for all the jobs you really fancy and stay positive.

    good luck

I personally think it doesn't matter what job you are looking for it's pretty difficult. And yes there are companies out there who don't bother applying at all.

Always difficult december/january, so a lot of people say.

    good luck

    Good post.

Massive influx of migrant workers is having a massive effect on labour market in all areas.
Individuals are left to cope with consequences & try to understand the truth of what is going on.

Government is too slow & incompetent to prepare for it.
They are too busy fiddling statistics & spinning the media.
