Lets keep it on topic. If you haven't anything to advise please don't post because I and most others don't wanna hear it!

I am out of work and will be trying my best to find a job without blaming everyone else.

I know someone who was in a similar boat... He got so fed up at being at home he went around all the businesses in the industrial estate nearby, handing out his CV. It ended out one company was thinking of employing someone to make up Electrical components from diagrams... Well you can see how this story ended. He got a new job just for asking. And because they hadn't advertised there was no-one to compete against!

Thanks for replies.....Not sure if I feel better or worse about my situation. Will have to continue trying.

Wannabee, I really don't think the immigrant situation is helping but certainly couldn't blame it all on them! Personally I think this 'Labour' government, with it's constant spin, is to carry most of the blame.

I have an electronic repair background but have spent more recent years in warehouse/admin roles. Heres hoping things get getter for all of us in the new year.

    Happy new year every1 :O)
  • The thought had crossed my mind to do this. They do say 60% of jobs are never advertised. Obviously not worth doing until the new year.
(If only I knew who 'they' were)!
  • "They" is probably Richard Bolles, author of WHAT COLOUR IS YOUR PARACHUTE - the ultimate jobsearch guide. It's a US publication updated annually. Your library will have a copy and I'd highly recommend it.
If you think reality makes sense, you're just not paying attention!

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. A lot of the time companies are thinking of getting new employee's but are often put off with the hassle of advertising and having to sort through the interiviews that they tend to drag their heels until they really have to.
Going along and letting them know you are available and qualified is a great idea. Saves them hassle and can do you no harm. You have nothing to lose from this exercise, it also makes them aware that you are keen enough and have the initiative to go out and search.
Good Luck and remember to be confident and sell yourself.

ANYONE CAN GET A JOB IF THEY TRY HARD ENOUGH AND PERSEVERE,i was in catering for 20+years(went to college from school) and 40 next year,i got very disillusioned with it over a year ago and spent about 15 mnoths applying for jobs in every field(bar catering) the amount of knock backs i got due to lack of"experience"but i carried on and 3 mnoths ago i got a job in a builders merchants(they trained me to use forklifts, put me on courses etc and donig my hgv next year) pays a lot better than what i was on and far happier they took a chance on me and i think i have repayed them so stick in there
  • Have you thought about signing up with several temping agencies ? I know that Universities / educational places often use agencies (ask the agency who their current clients) and these temporary roles often turn permanent. Even if they don't, the experience you gain looks good on your CV and you can sometimes get discounted courses that the agency recommends.

I guess you have already tried this, but when I was looking for work (got made redundant) I asked friends / family / strangers in the supermarket if they knew of any jobs going, it is quite surprising what jobs are out there when people know you are looking.

Good luck and hopefully the new year will bring you a fab job, as lots of people tend to want to change their jobs in January/February so there should be a few more vacancies around.

    Moo
I was going to take over the world but got distracted by something sparkly.......

Probably stating the obvious but get someone to look over your CV. I was made redundant the week before Christmas and thought my CV was fine (I only started the job in August and it was good enough then!) but I then met with a HR Consultant who really helped. Just by changing the layout and order of my CV, within a week of sending it out, I managed to get 5 interviews in 1 week.

Like people have said dont be disheartened by not hearing back from companies.

I must have registered with 10 or more agencies and every one of them told me December was the worst time of year to be job hunting but January is always busy so Im sure you'll find something soon.
