This is the first time I have cooked for christmas and im sooo nervous. There will be 5 there and I was wondering what to have for starters ? Im a vegetarian but the rest eat meat ( my oh doesnt like fish nor does his neice ) so I want to make something that we all could eat.
My oh mother suggested soup but I was not sure if this would be too filling with a big turkey meal and deserts .What re you having and what would you suggest thats easy for a beginner but also hugely impressive !! thanks

Don't have a starter ! I never have done, mum never has done, mil never has done. Christmas lunch is big enough without starters
But, if you don't like that idea, try a fruit cocktail or a wedge of melon.0 -
We always have prawn cocktail, or avocado cocktail for the veggies. I know it's a bit '1982' but it's nice and light, and really easy to do."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250

We don't have a starter either. If you really wanted one how about doing a tomato and mozarella salad, or some roasted peppers (I have a nice recipe with tomatoes and garlic and basil if you want it), or a greek salad.0

we don't bother with a starter either - you want to leave plenty of room for turkey, roast spuds, christmas pud, mince pies, chocolates.....0

Crostini would be a lovely idea.
Can be served with a nice glass of wine before sitting down for the meal lie canapes or as a starter when seated.

I have a recipe for a lovely homemade tomato soup. Its very thin but very tasty and won't fill you up unless you eat lots of bread with it!!! You can make it now (I usually double the quantity below)and freeze it until the big day and then all you have to do is reheat and perhaps garnish with a tiny sprig of parsley.
1 oz butter
1½ lb quartered tomatoes
1½ pints chicken stock
1 medium onion finely chopped
1 bay leaf
½ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
thinly pared rind of ¼ orange
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon sugar
Melt the butter in a pan and add the tomatoes. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring. Add the stock, onion, bay leaf, pepper, salt and orange rind. Bring to the boil and simmer for 45 minutes. Take off the heat and put the soup through a sieve. Squash through as much as you can with a spoon and then throw away the contents of the sieve. Put the soup back on the heat and add the lemon juice and sugar, stirring. The soup is now ready to serve or freeze.0 -
We don't have a starter either and never have done. Stuffing our faces with chocolate and biscuits etc in the morning usually surfices, plus you need room for a slice of chocolate log and christmas pud as well!!!"I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0

We don't have a starter either. We are the same as Alleycat, eating too many chocolates in the morning. Kids love it as it is the one day that I will allow them chocolate for breakfast. :rotfl:0
