E on Letter received
Has anyone else had this letter,i received a letter yesterday advising i was going to receive A HIGH GAS BILL in capitals across the top of the letter , they gave me 7 days to re read the meter and call them to discuss. On receipt panic kicked in and i went and read the meter and called the number,i waited some 8/10 minutes and the chap said OH SORRY they have been sent out in error and we actualy owe you £147.This is scandalous, just think if an elderly person received a letter of this nature.

I suspect they send this type of letter if you have submitted a meter reading and it indicates a very high bill because you have misread it. As it says 're-read' I assume this type of lettter does not cover estimated bills.
What is worse; getting a letter like this (which in your case was because you submittted an incorrect reading) or a bill for say £1000? For an elderly person I think the latter would be a lot worse.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

I am an elderly person and I wouldn't panic if I received a letter like this, I would just assume that they had cocked up as usual.
Not all elderly people panic at the first sign of a letter like that.
What if it had been a child that received it?0 -

How do you think E.On could have handled the issue better?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi redmalc
High bill letters are sent out when we receive a meter reading that looks to be out of synch with previous readings and will result, if used, in much higher charges than usual for the account in question.
The intention is to give customers the opportunity to check we're using the correct information.
We've found customers generally prefer to be forewarned about a potential large bill. If we do have the wrong info, this can be corrected before the bill is issued. It also offsets any knock on effects like increasing a Direct Debit when not necessary.
Hope this helps explain why we send these letters redmalc. Give me a shout if you need any further info as will be happy to help.
