High mileage motors - just what are the risks ?

I prefer to check the service history and unlike you, I got protection under SOGA when I bought mine from a dealer. You get nowt, nothing, nada, zilch and there is no guarantee it has not been clocked before it went to auction but unlike me, you have no comeback if it turns out it had been.
does that mean i get nothing, zilch ,nap, nowt, nothing, less than, not as much as ,maybe, carebeee ,then:rotfl:;)0 -
I currently have a £750 bucket that I fully plan on making work pay for at 35p/mile :rotfl: (currently at about £300 in claimable expenses after a week, so)
Good thing about newer cars that show the same mileage as this bucket is that they'll not have age related problems and will not have been run on a shoestring for the past 3 years like this has
I know what you mean, my car cost £170 and work pay me 40p/mile:beer:I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling

Entirely dependant on how driven by previous owners what sort of car you are going to get.
When you have seen drivers that can get through a clutch in three weeks, never get the engine warm because of short journeys, clip kerbs when going round corners braking on engine or brakes type driving (choose your preference. I consider brakes cheaper and easier to replace than clutch and gearbox.) etc etc etc.
In other words, despite all suggestions, buying a used car depends a great deal on luck, which can be mitigated to some extent by knowledge.0 -
That assumes someone buying a £4k 130k mile Mondeo would otherwise have bought a £10k 30k mile one - not the case really is it?
You really didn't get my drift did you fella. I didn't say that, what I did say is that for "your" 4k you could have a "5 year old 60k job or a 3 year old 90k one" figuritively speaking of course.
You need to realise that you have several choices, a couple being, buy a brand new spanker if thats what you want, (then resign from here)
Buy a 5 year old car with little mileage, all the age and deterioration that comes in 5 years and the engine rot from low use,
or for the same price the 3 year old high miler that has been run as intended, has had all the issues sorted because it's been a proffessional car, no service expense spared and will have come directly from the leasee or tha auction and be presented imaculately,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
High milers everytime for me.
Though Motability cars are not that expensive at auctio these days due to them being auto and petrol quite often.
Buy for next to nothing, LPG conversion for £1200 including FlashLube and shazam, running costs of a diesel, but without the need to stand at the mucky pump, and quieter and simpler to service, plus less to go wrong, lets face it a clutch and a DMF aren't much less than getting an autobox reconned at the local bloke I use.
Just another way of looking at the situation.
But I have never had an issue with a high miler ex fleet 3 yr old motor.0
