Can my partner get housing benefit?

So £186 a month. Given your not inconsiderable income I doubt you'll get any more benefits. However, you have chosen to study rather than work; this does mean than some sacrifices have to be made. You'll reap the benefits once you are qualified. Head over to the Old Style board. There are some people on there that manage on £2.50 a week or something silly.
I'm sorry? The £95 left over from my partner pays for around 5 days travel to London. I pay the rest out of my wages right now.
The child benefit is what we currently use for food.0 -

I don't why I bothered asking here, I had more support from thestudentroom, I have worked full time since I left college, with the exception of maternity leave, we have never claimed benefits in our lives. Maybe I should have had 10 kids and stopped work. This is why I am so !!!!ing depressed. I hate my life because we wanted to actually do things for ourselves and not rely on benefits.0

So why claim nearly £20k in student finance plus child benefit and tax credits and come on here asking about housing benefit!0 -
So what that I'm claiming 20K in SF? Is that the issue here? Should I not have had a child before getting a degree? Well !!!! happens. Its not my fault we were earning £35k before my partner got made redundant, became self employed instead of sitting on his !!!! for 5 years and is now only on £18k
I am not claiming tax credits at the moment. Everyone who has a child gets child benefit, we've never claimed housing benefit/JSA or income support because we work. Everyone who has a child with household income less than £25k is entitled to exactly the same as me.
I want to actually have a decent life and get out of this country.0 -
PS: Have some of you not read this sticky:
Its about helping people get their entitlement! Not about benefits policy!
This board is here for help and support for those on or looking to claim benefits, not for judgement.
It’s ONLY focus is helping people with their money.
It's here to help people find out what they are entitled to under the current system, and to help them get it.
Benefits provide a lifeline for many, and this site is here to help people with their money, and not to judge. Of course, how to illegally defraud the benefits system shouldn't be discussed here, but ensuring you're getting your entitlement is exactly what it’s about.
We all know the benefits system is a mess – but that’s for the discussion time.
Whatever you're political persuasion, we're all aware the benefits system is a mess. Whether it’s the malpayments of tax credits, benefit fraud, or simply the fact that sometimes it doesn't pay to work - everyone has their grumble.
Yet to discuss the benefits system itself and issues around it, the appropriate place isn't here but the Discussion Time Board and even there, please remember courtesy and not to make it personal about anyone. This site's prime purpose it to help people with their money and I will always act to protect that.
Thanks for your co-operation

I'm going to be a student in september, my partner is self employed and earns around £1500 before tax/NI (which normally leaves £1100 after) each month. We already have a 2 bed house together, and a son. Can we claim housing benefit as my partner will be paying all the main bills, with no money left over.
I have tightly budgeted but can see that we might run into difficulties.
Heres what I've worked out:
Me:
Maintenance loan - £5793.00
Tuition loan - £3375.00
Parents learning allowance - £1508.00
Maintenance grant - £2906.00
Childcare grant - £5610.00
Total is £3375 paid to uni, £15817.00 paid to me.
My childcare for 38 weeks is £8740.00 (as I'm on a foundation year)
Leaves me with this a week: £123.50 term 1, £167.90 term 2, £343.50 term 3.
I know it sounds alot, esp. in term 3 BUT:
My partner:
Income after tax - £1100 a month.
Pays for:
Rent: £750
c/tax: £158, we are on a payment plan already, so I don't know if the 25% discount applies in sept or next april.
Water: £30, on a payment plan for this aswell
Electricity: £30-40
Gas: £10 a month if its summer, around £40 its winter (gas heating)
TV licence: £30, on a payment plan
Means £95 for the month max. As my partner doesn't drive he pays for travel into london. Obviously £95 doesn't go far. So I help pay for that as well as everything else, nappies, car tax, car insurance, petrol, mot, mobile bills, we dont have any sky or virgin packages, £15 dongle. I can't get rid of the car because I'm going to be driving 17 miles to uni each way a day.
I know that the LHA is £201.92 for a 2 bed house in our area. We have tried moving to a flat for cheaper c/tax and bills but have been looking for nearly 6 months with no luck. We were very lucky to get a house this cheap, but it has really really bad damp and mould.
Anyways sorry about the really long post...

You admitted yourself that you had not included child benefit and tax credits in your calculations. You also said that your partner had £95 a week left, plus the CB and CTC - making a total of an additional £186 a month. As I said, your income is actually pretty good, other people manage on a lot less than you - and we all have similar outgoings. I have already advised that your income is, in all likelihood too high for further benefits.creeping_jesus wrote: »I don't why I bothered asking here, I had more support from thestudentroom
With the exception of post #8 all the responses you have received have been reasonable so I am not sure what you are referring to here. You might not like what you are hearing, but no one has been rude.creeping_jesus wrote: »PS: Have some of you not read this sticky..<snip>
Have you? The only person I can see swearing and being rude is you (post #16).0 -

Unless you have been working for at least twenty years (and by the sounds of it just a few years) then what you have paid in you'll be taking back out plus thousands more.
You'll get better answers to your post if you drop the sense of entitlement.0 -

Oh, I understand , youre going to suck up thousands of pounds, in effect a free education, then pi$$ off with no intention of paying back your debt.creeping_jesus wrote: »So what that I'm claiming 20K in SF? Save yourselves some time and the taxpayer some money - go now.
