Stop the Clock and passport - still incredibly expensive!

I signed up for the Stop the Clock and Vodafone Passport a few months ago, thinking it would save me some money, as I go abroad quite regularly with my work, however it isn't as cheap as I expected. Although it only costs about 63p to make a phone call from Spain (not bad), who talks for an hour? If your only calling home for a couple of minutes two or three times a day, its actually very expensive.
Also you have to be very careful that you select the correct network when you arrive. I was told to connect to "Vodafone Spain" and only that exact one, otherwise I would be charged more, but when I got there, there was no "Vodafone Spain" option. I presumed it must have been Vodafone ES, but it wasn't clear.
Also on arriving I received about 5 text messages telling me to connect to Vodafone Spain to benefit from my Passport option, but these were taken out of my monthly allowance, and one time I was charged for them because I had run out of texts.
I have repeatedly tried to get a straight answer from Vodafone about exactly how much calling home from abroad will cost, but they can never give me an exact answer and this is really annoying, however, I don't know if this is the same for all mobile companies.
Can anyone give a recommendation of a good mobile company to use when you go abroad a lot?;)

I guess vodafone es is vodafone espania. So although they gave you a different name, I guess technically it was right, after all why would they give it an english name.
I don't think any network will give you much detail about how much calls cost from abroad, as they are are passed on the costs from which ever foreign network was used, and the networks don't know all the call costs for each individual network around the world, as there must be hundreds of networks
get a sim card from spain or whatever country you are in. Thats what i did in russia. Text messages were 3p home, not 24p or whatever vodafone charge from abroad0
