car with hp but not in my name

hi,

in feb 07 a female friend of mine bought a car on hp but had the car put in my name. the car was NEVER in her name.

she has vanished for the last 2 years and there is still around 12000 owing on the car.

the finance company said they cant repossess the car as it is in my name and not hers.

the finance company said they will lift the hp if i pay them 3000.
i don't have the 3000 they want, so where do i stand?

i have seen the other posts on hp but this is a different situation.

bottom line is i want to sell the car as i need the cash.

also, if possible please dont guess or assume what i can or cant do, as much as i appreciate the help, i need to know 100% what i can do

First of all, im not judging you but i feel that it was a bad idea on your side to put the car in your name for her. What car what is it as it must of been a real expensive roadster if 12000 is left to pay.

The only way of you being able to get something done and that's a maybe, is that you contact the police, give them her name, her previous address as im guessing she has moved ans any other useful information you may know that will be able to track her down.

Hopefully she has still got the car and you can get it back.

i think you have misunderstood me, she got the car for me, but the finance was in her name.

i still have the car.

its a peugot 307 estate and it only had around 18 months paid before she vanished.

There is nothing you can do. The car isn't yours and you can't sell it as there is outstanding finance against it. Do you mean that your disappearing friend put you as the registered keeper on the V5? That is not the same as owning the vehicle. Have you ever insured it? Got any record of payments you've made on it?
It belongs to the finance company.

she got the car on finance for me because i could not get credit.
i paid her for around 18 months for the repayments until she vanished.
my name is on the log book, even though i know that doesnt mean i own the car. i have been insured on the car untill around may 09, since then it has been standing still

i understand that the finance company own the car but they told me they cant collect it as the finance was not in my name

Why haven't you used it since 2009?
