Returning camera under guarantee -- to Germany!

Options
I'm not sure if this post is on the right forum, but here goes. My Traveller camera has died after 2 years and a bit use, and I happily packed it up return it for repair as it's still under the 3 year guarantee. On reading the guarantee card I find it's going to cost me something like £30 to post it to Germany. Isn't there some ruling that faulty goods under guarantee should be returned to the place of purchase (Aldi in this case)?

This must have been posted before but I can't find it.

If you purchased it from Aldi, that is with whom your contract is with under the Sale of Goods Act, you actually have no contract with the manufacturer so they could tell you they do not want to know.

    The following is from HERE,

" It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract."

  • Yes you should be going back to Aldi, from a legal point of view as you do have rights against them for up to 6 years, completely unrelated to any guarantee. Guarantees have their own T&Cs and you are bound by those as to the help and options they can give. You will just have to think practically of the options open to you as to which is the best way to go. After 3 years, you will probably be entitled to a contribution towards a repair, a 3 year old replacement or a partial refund (from Aldi). This will have to be worked out as expected lifespan compared with actual lifespan, 50%, 25% etc. This might mean that you are £30 out of pocket anyway, so which is likely to work out best?

I'm not saying that the legal side isn't the way to go, just that you have to balance a few factors into it.
