Negligent Solicitor??

Apologies for the lenth of this post but its a little complicated!!
We hired a conveyancing solicitor for our first house purchase and used him as he was recommended by our estate agent. Unknown to us his partner was being investigated for fraud!! :embarasse
After negotiating a price reduction and having our mortgage lender notified, we waited, and waited and waited for our new mortgage offer to be released. In the mean time, everything else was ready to go, we even paid the solicitor our deposit and fees ready for completion. Finally we got a call and our solicitor asked us if we wanted him to exchange and then a couple of hours later called again to say he couldn't exchange as there was a problem with our mortgage offer!! Our mortgage offer had been sent to a different solicitors, without our consent or knowledge .
It turns out that our financial advisor had been told by the mortgage lender that they had taken our solicitor off of the panel of solicitors that they were prepared to deal with due to the fraud investigation and that our solicitor knew about this 6 weeks prior, hence the hold up with the new mortgage offer! Our solicitor then decided to come clean and tell us the truth.
So with solicitor number 2 on the case, what could go wrong!?!
After hearing nothing for a couple of days we chased it up and spoke to solicitor number 2, who said that he had never heard of us and had never seen our new mortgage offer .
Our first solicitor had disputed the amount of money solicitor number 2 had requested and had told our financial advisor to get our mortgage offer re issued to solicitor munber 3 and again this was done without our knowledege or consent!!
Solicitor number 3 is now in control and things seem to be moving again but when she produced the bill it was an extra £1800 than previous. Solicitor number 1 had his figures all wrong!
Is this a case of negligence?
This has been the most stressful few months of our lives.
Is there a case for compensation of some sort?
If so how would we go about it?
Many thanks, any help would be grateful!!
