127.0.0.1 appeared in my Network?

Options
Hi all,

Just noticed that a 'computer' called 127.0.0.1 has just appeared in my network, using Vista. If I click on it I get an error message saying it can't resolve the address. Bit of googling says that this is actually some sort of feedback loop IP address which always feeds back my own PC, however it's only just appeared and am a bit worried that it's something dodgy. Any suggestions on what it is, why it might have just appeared, and if I should be worried?

Many thanks

Steve

Cheers, expected it would be harmless, but really intrigued as to why it has just decided to show itself in my network, but never before?

It's been there all the time - you just haven't noticed it!

It is what is known as the 'home address' (also 'loopback address').

Hence the T-shirt slogan: "There's no place like 127.0.0.1"...

    (IPv6 uses 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1)
