Broken settee and chair!

Hi, any advice would be great. I purchased a leather recliner settee and chair in the 'Diego' range from Argos in Sept 2010. Just over 2 weeks ago the lever on the recliner chair snapped and the wire did too. Also the settee came in 2 parts which had to be screwed together so the part we put together when you try and push the recliner bit in it doesnt fit properly unless you stand up and push it with your feet that bit also tilts if you lean on it with your elbow as if it is going to come apart!

I rang Argos about the matter stating what the problem was and they sent someone out to look at it. The person didnt have any of the bits to fix it with and took photos. He claimed the wire was glued in and not screwed in so in time will snap anyway and i would have to wait for parts to come in.

The chair has got worse since then and if you move forward on it it will creek and move side to side. I have again rang Argos who just don't seem to care and have told me to wait for parts to come in.

I stated that if the wires on the settee are glued then it is only a matter of time before they snap and again they fobbed me off saying to wait for the person to come out and fix it.

I want to know what are my rights on this? Thanks.

    Op I feel for you.
My Diego suite is on the way back for a full refund.

3 seater and matching chair. All the recliner cables have snapped etc, first time was 2 weeks after delivery. Again we were told by the argos repair team that came out that the cables were glued etc, They fixed the cable and screwed all the glued parts.

They have broken 4 times in 16 months, all the same problems, I had to get an indepentant report done (which argos will refund upto £40) which stated that 1) the cables were too thin for the use and 2) the screws that were fitted were not strong enough.

Argos have now agreed to a full refund and are collecting the whole suite next week.

I totally agree with you when you say the 2 parts don't seem to fit together properly, the single panel always feels like it's not attached lol

p.s this was the second settee as the first broke within 3 months when the cable snapped and the main recliner mechinism bent??

Keep onto them OP. Good Luck. xx
Think it's about time the comping fairy remembered where I am! lol

  • Well after a lot of ranting and raving Argos have agreed to give us a new settee up to the value we have paid and take the old one away for us!

At first they said they would replace the chair but when we pointed out it was the settee too they backed down!

The reason for buying the settee and chair was the good reviews it had but they were from people who had recently purchased it and not a few months later.

Argos agreed it would cost more to fix and admitted they hadn't even ordered the parts in 3 weeks after i complained.

Just waiting for a phone call from them now to deliver the new settee and take this load of rubbish away, they had better be more helpful than last time they refused to bring it into my house even though there were 3 delivery people, i was 7 months pregnant at the time and my poor husband had to lug it in on his own it is VERY heavy!!!!!!!
