I've done it. It was pet portraits mostly, especially around Christmas. I did some local Art Fairs, and also had a small shop (which sold other people's crafts too). Thing is, for a detailed pencil sketch it takes so long I wasn't really making above Minimum wage if that...!

You might try and get a stall, maybe as a one-off, on a local busy market. I have done one-off quick portraits of people too, but you have to be able to capture someone's essence quickly. Have plenty of business cards and examples. You might not sell anything there and then, but you'll get the idea into people's minds.

Also look into producing your own cards, mugs, posters, prints, keyrings, coasters - anything with your own work on it, that you can sell. Talk to a local printer, as well as online places like zazzle and cafepress. A local printer might do you a nice deal if they think they'll get mutual advertising, and ongoing business.

when our youngest was at private nursery, think he was around 2, they had someone come in to photograph the children or you could take your own photo in and the artist would sketch the picture. really good he was im pretty sure we paid around £90 framed but he is 9 now so was a while ago
