The thing thats making me want to move away from sainsburys also is that they have a £200 excess....I know I know I never checked it properly when I took the policy out. ANyway if i was to stay with them chances are they wouldnt pay much out for treatment anyway.

We kept our old girl covered until she was 14 as the cost of the drugs was more than the monthly premiums, plus the insurers covered the monthly assessment visits.

At 14 we were living with her by the month and didn't renew the policy - we funded the drugs and assessments ourselves which averaged £80 per month - but she lived until she was over 15.

It really depends on your personal financial circumstances - if your dog was involved in an RTA leaving him with a broken leg, could you afford to pay for it - costs could be several hundred pounds. If you can, then no contest. However if you would struggle then you might be better to keep the insurance going. You are very unlikely to find a new insurer because of his age and all treatment to date will be excluded.

I would ask your vet what an estimated bill for the most common chronic conditions such as diabetes would be, between the tests and the medication some can run to thousands per year.

I would insure if possible, we have all our pets insured and I am so glad we did as one of ours had a nasty accident recently and the bill was way beyond what we could have afforded otherwise.
