Are the small white vans (like say the small transit with side door) more expensive than small or medium family cars (maybe 1.5-1.7 cc enginges ,to insure ??
I want one to use, to bring occasional things like chairs, tv maybe some boards/boxs occasionally ,l would'nt be using it commerically; do insurance companies charge more for these type vehicles ?

I have always found van insurance to be cheaper but that is for commercial use. The van insurance for a MWB sprinter at the moment fully comp with twice as much mileage allowance than my car is about half the price of the car on insurance.

Do a few quotes online, plenty of sources available. Look on autotrader for a number plate of one you like and see how it compares.

Direct Line van insurance (F/C) for LWB, Hi-Top 3.1Tonne LDV Convoy £470 without any NCB.
    Road Tax £210 p/a.

The beauty of commercial vehicle insurance is that if you want to earn extra money moving things for people, you have no worries about invalidating your insurance.

I actually think it is silly that my insurance this year for the van was £359 (1 years NCD), whilst for my car it was £336 (70% NCD), yet my van will do a damn site more damage if I hit anyone in it and it takes-up a huge amount of road space.

Low insurance and £210 p/a RFL are the reason so many people buy crew-cab pick-ups like the Mitsubushi Warrior instead of proper 4 x 4's like the Discovery or Shogun that cost 3x as much to Tax.

as always, read your policy, we're an engineering firm and ours only covers us for carriage of our own goods.

Moving other peoples good for money would be outside the terms of the policy.

You wont be able to take stuff to the tip, Or they may want to charge you.

Insuring it for private use is sometimes hard as someone may offer you money to pick
something up or drop it off.

Shop around is the answer everyone will vary.

Cheaper to insure a large executive saloon with a gas guzzling powerful petrol engine than a mid range
    economic diesel car.

Not every council, all vans are banned from ours full stop, you have to have a waste license to dump no exceptions. Most waste has to be paid for now aswell at the local tip.

I have heard some councils do that but we have never been able to, hence why we always used the car instead of the van lol. Now though they charge you for most stuff, bag of rubble a couple of quid, a sheet of plasterboard is £7 to dump IIRC. Its a joke as there has been no reduction in council tax and they sell of most of the rubbish to be recycled.
