EDF got my meter reading wrong
EDF got my meter reading wrong and now they say I owe £738.88!
I changed from Eon to EDF last July and pay by DD. They assured me £30 per month would be adequate although there was a possibilty if prices went up I would have a little extra to pay when my acount was reviewed at 12 months. Needless to say I was more than surprised, well shocked would be more like it, to receive this large bill and rang them up. A very nice customer services person spoke to me, explained that somehow at the changeover a wrong meter reading had been entered and my account had now been corrected and this was the amount outstanding.
They will allow me pay it off in 12 monthly installments and was told I would not get any threatening letters because of the debt - how kind of them.
I know I must have used this amount of electricity over the year, well that's what they tell me, but it is their mistake so why should I pay. I feel they should have noticed this sooner.
Help!!!!

why didnt you take regular meter readings yourself? didnt you notice the discrepency in the last year ?0

What do you mean, "why should I pay?" You're not paying any more than you should have anyway. It was your responsibility to check your DD was realistic.0

Jack, it is a new account with Night tariff and Day tariff - new to me, so could not compare with last year at our previous address. In hindsight, yes I should've taken regular readings but trusted EDF to get it right.
Also had other things to do like care for disabled husband and in hospital myself for major op - sorry for the sob story but that's life.

Malcolm - I queried DD with them and was told it was ok, and yes I know I have used it and therefore have to pay. I was just having a whinge at the fact it was such a large amount before it was corrected.0 -
i make my own readings every quater , then compare them to the bill - not what you want to hear , but in the last year why didnt you check what the readings were
by law a supplier only has to check your meter every 2 years ; now imagine the situation after 2 years of not checking your own meter to be hit with a £1400 catch up bill.
moral of the story is , check your own meter! takes 2 mins.0 -
Jack,
I did take the readings and telephoned them through to EDF twice during the year. As a complete novice at a two-price tariff it looked ok to me and was accepted by them. I was unaware that somewhere they had entered a wrong number that originated from previous supplier. As I did not know that how could I see whether it was right or not?
I will take your advice and take readings regularly - heaven forbid I should be hit with a
bill for £1,400:eek:0
